CW and the PASCHAL CANDLE STAND, ST MARY’S CATHEDRAL, SYDNEY
Following the success of his Ambo for the Church of Australia in Rome, renowned sculptor, Nigel Boonham, recently witnessed the installation of his latest work in the Sanctuary of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney, Australia.
Standing at over 3 metres tall, this impressive candle stand features Mary, the Apostles and a lamb, each piece cast in brass and mounted around a decorative column. If not the tallest, it is probably the heaviest stand made in recent years.
As with the Ambo, all the metal work from casting to assembly was completed in our Eastbourne foundry and we were very pleased to be working closely with Nigel again. Sydney’s sandstone Gothic Revival masterpiece is no stranger to his artistic endeavours having previously been commissioned by the Archbishop to carve a new altar in Carrara marble.
As can been seen in the images that Nigel kindly sent us from Australia, the warm red glow of the cathedral interior reflecting on the textured and polished brass surfaces enhance the aesthetics more than we could have imagined under factory lighting.
